Five Minutes to Mindful Evenings: A Simple Unwind Ritual

Ever feel like your brain is still “on” hours after the workday ends? You’re not alone. As educators, our days are fullβ€”and winding down isn’t always easy. But what if just five minutes could help you reset?
After a recent wellness retreat for educators, I left with one powerful takeaway: resilience isn’t just about pushing throughβ€”it’s about building rituals that help us pause, recharge, and come back stronger.

Rituals vs. Habits
We often toss around terms like habit, routine, and ritualβ€”but they’re not the same.
Rituals are conscious signals to our body and mindβ€”they help us shift gears. By turning even the smallest routine into a meaningful ritual, we create space for renewal.

  • Habit: An automatic action, like brushing your teeth.
  • Ritual: A routine infused with intention and meaning. This is where the magic happens.
  • Routine: A repeated series of actions, like making coffee while checking the news.

My Simple Unwind Ritual

Here’s the five-minute ritual that helps me switch off and ease into evening:

  1. Scent: I rub lavender essential oil on my wrists and temples. The calming scent instantly signals: Kelli slow down and take a deep breath.
  2. Sip: I enjoy a small glass of tart cherry juice or chamomile tea, sometimes with a bit of magnesium powder. This simple, soothing act helps me transition into rest mode.
  3. Say + Reflect: I quietly say a positive affirmationβ€”something like β€œI’ve done enough for today”—and reflect on one thing I’m grateful for. It’s a small moment of self-kindness that helps me end the day grounded and at peace.

That’s it. Just five minutesβ€”but it makes a real difference. It’s my way of saying, β€œThe day is over. It’s time to recover.”

What small ritual could you create to help your mind and body unwind?

Try one tonightβ€”and if it helps, share it with someone else who might need the reminder, too.

Love,Β
