Youโre Not Behind: Redefining Success on Your Own Terms
Redefining Success and Choose Peace Instead of Pressure
Thatโs what someone told me recently โ in the middle of a light conversation about picking out custom curtains. As if custom home items only belonged to homeowners. I was so caught off guard.
But letโs pause. Behindโฆ by whose standards?
This idea that women must follow one specific timeline โ get married, buy a house, have kids, and call it the American Dream โ is rooted in a centuries-old patriarchal narrative. Itโs outdated. It assumes success only looks one way, and if you deviate, you must be delayed.
Hereโs the truth: people do what makes sense for them. You never know their reasoning, their circumstances, or their priorities.

I live in one of the worst states for insurance premiums, hurricane risk, and failing infrastructure. So, remind me again โ why would I rush to buy here? Are people in New York questioned at my age about why they rent apartments instead of buying brownstones? Probably not.
The comment made me realize that not everyone truly sees or supports you. Some statements come from insecurity, jealousy, or a narrow worldview. But โyouโre behindโ isnโt just insensitive โ itโs lazy thinking.
My version of the American Dream is peace. Itโs contributing to my community, being financially secure, and nurturing relationships that make life meaningful. Iโm building a life that fits me โ not one that fits a checklist someone else made decades ago.
For me, this season is about redefining success โ choosing joy and alignment over comparison and timelines, and creating a version of fulfillment that actually feels like mine.
So, no โ Iโm not behind. Iโm exactly where Iโm supposed to be.
Love,
Kellikelz
